In Shogi Battlefield handicaps can be applied in matches between players of different ranks. These handicaps involve the removal of one or both Lances from the higher ranked player.
In a game between players where the difference in rank is 2 or 3 ranks, (ex. A 3rd dan player vs. a 1st dan player), the higher ranked player may only use one Lance.
In a game between players where the difference in rank is 4 ranks, (ex. A 3rd dan player vs. a second grade player), the higher ranked player may not use any Lances.
